Security Services in the Cloud

by Ricky Melgares on September 30, 2009

As part of my job with CSI (Cyber Security Initiative) at Dartmouth, one of the things that we’ve been researching is the performance of security services in the cloud. The upkeep and maintenance of servers used for security services such as penetration testing and forensic analysis is costly, especially when these servers are used only a couple of times a month. It is for this reason that cloud computing is attractive for so many organizations and businesses. With cloud computing you only pay for what you use, at a fraction of the cost of traditional in-house setups. However attractive cloud computing may be, there are serious issues to consider when performing security services from the cloud. For example, how can the same cloud services being used for security be used against us? The following presentation details some of our findings in our research and investigation into the performance of security services from the cloud.
