my workspace @ home (houston, tx)

by Ricky Melgares on December 31, 2008

I am always interested in learning about and seeing people’s work spaces. You can see that my workspace is a bit messy at the moment. This is partly due to the fact that I was too lazy to get everything perfect since I’ll be going back to school pretty soon. I’m usually pretty anal-retentive when it comes to getting my workspace set up just right. You can ask any one of my roommates, whom have seen me reorganizing the entire room too many times. I usually get everything just the way I want it come the second or third time around.

Both friends and family have come into my room recently and the first question that they have asked is “How many computers do you have?!” or as my Dad stated the other day in a very serious tone “Do you have enough computers?.”

Equipment
Pictured above, are the following things (I’m only mentioning the note-worthy stuff):

  • Macbook Pro 15″ (Santa Rosa)
    • This is my workhorse. I use this computer for playing graphics intensive games like Call of Duty 4, Half-Life 2, and Battlefield 2142. I used this computer very heavily this past fall term for rendering in Maya using mental ray and final gather. I also use it for photo editing using Aperture 2 (for personal photo projects) and Adobe Lightroom 2 (for photo-journalism as a staff photographer for The Dartmouth). I also have Adobe Creative Suite 3 Design Premium installed, which includes Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, and Dreamweaver CS3. Dreamweaver is the only program I don’t use often from the creative suite.
  • Dell 2007WFP
    • I originally bought this monitor for use at school but decided to ship it home over the summer in an attempt to remove some clutter from my dorm room. This monitor replaced a really old and HUGE 20″ CRT monitor.
  • Powerbook G4 15″
    • This computer is basically used for audio streaming (hooked up to our home stereo system), wireless video streaming (using Slingbox), and occasional email checking and web browsing by the family. The Powerbook suffered a 4-foot drop two years ago that banged up the bottom case pretty badly. Surprisingly, the superdrive still works.
  • Macbook Aluminum 13″
    • I basically use this computer for taking notes in class and as a backup computer in general. The video card on my Mabook Pro died on me right before finals this past term and I couldn’t afford to be computer-less the weeks preceding and during finals. It was rather unpractical for me to borrow or rent a computer so I ended up buying this one as a replacement for the Macbook Pro.
  • WD 1TB 7200rpm external drive
    • I bought this drive over Christmas because it was on sale. This drive is used specifically for backup purposes. I have two 320 GB partitions set apart for use with Time Machine for my Macbook Pro and Macbook Aluminum (both laptops have a 320GB HDD), one 20 GB partition which has a bootable version of Leopard and some maintenance/data recovery software installed, and a 270 GB MS-DOS FAT32 formatted partition for general storage and for transferring files between Mac and Windows (since Windows won’t recognize the Mac OS extended formatted partitions, without the use of a third-party program such as MacDrive anyways, which I have installed in the Vista Bootcamp partition on my Macbook Pro).
  • Bose Companion 2 speakers
    • I used to own an older model of these speakers which I took with me to college Freshmen year. When I came home I realized that I had no spare speakers in the house so I went out and bought another pair. These speakers sound pretty good even without a sub-woofer. The neat thing about these speakers is that they have two-audio inputs in the back.
  • Battlefield 2142
    • Even though it’s a step-down from the previous Battlefield games, it can still be a pretty fun game to play.
  • iPhone 3G
    • Check out my previous post regarding my first impressions of the iPhone 3G: http://bit.ly/j6b8
  • Logitech MX-518 gaming-grade optical mouse
    • This mouse is amazing. It is the second MX-518 mouse that I have owned in the past 3-4 years (the first one I bought stopped working for some reason, probably because I abused it way too much). It is very light and comfortable, accurate (1800-dpi mx optical engine), and has buttons on the mouse for controlling the sensitivity. This is awesome for making on the fly sensitivity adjustments in-game.
  • Vaio desktop PC 2.4Ghz Pentium 4
    • This is our home/office PC. I use it to connect to our home network remotely via VPN and to access files stored on our living room media PC/server.

I covered the previous things briefly so if you would like to know something about them in specific, please comment, and I will reply with a comment or post, depending on the depth of my answer.
